This week at SFO

As the snow begins to melt and the days get warmer we have brought the games outdoors to enjoy the sun. We had a lovely week with lots of movement and fresh air.

On Wednesday, we visited the gym and split the SFO children into groups where they would practice various sports: basketball, football, american football and other games. This was an exciting activity and both the children and staff had fun.

Winter competitions

After the children voted for their favorite drawing, we decided to create a couple more competitions. Working in teams, the students could earn points for their houses by completing different tasks. This activities allowed the children to express themselves and communicate effectively with others.

The winner of the drawing competition got 10 house points for Skadi. This is picture chosen by the SFO kids:

The other competitions consisted on making the largest possible snake with a page of newspaper without using glue or scissors. The winner got Buri 5 house points.

Finally, a group of students each got a house point for building the biggest snowman. This was challenging as there was not much snow on the ground.

Drawing competition finalists

The drawing competition is not over yet! Since there were so many wonderful drawings entered, it was tough to vote for only one. Therefore, the drawing that got the most votes have been entered into a final round and the winner will get 10 house points!
These are the finalists:

This week, some of the students worked on a project related to the unit How we organize ourselves. They built a bus using different materials that we found in school: a paper box, scrap paper and newspaper. The activity was enjoyed by many and the results show it:

Have a good weekend!

Drawing exhibition and competition

This week at SFO the students were asked to submit a drawing made during the SFO hours for a competition. They worked on their coloring and then we put the finished work up on the wall for everyone to see. Then, each student was encouraged to vote for the drawing they most liked and that drawing would featured on the blog and win 5 house points.
The winner will be announced Monday January 30th. So far, the students seemed eager to vote and to guess who was the artist behind the winning drawing. All the students that submitted their art for the competition will be awarded a house point too.
During the outside playtime we have been playing on the ice, sliding and hoping for some snow to be able to use our sleds.
On Wednesday, some kids went to their skiing lessons, so after they returned we relaxed and had a movie night at SFO! Here are some pictures from this week:

Happy 2017!

The SFO staff wishes everyone a Happy New Year 2017 and a warm welcome back to school. We want to remind the parents that during SFO we will continue to have outdoor play time and therefore we ask to check that the children have the proper clothes for these chilly days.

This week at SFO we are settling in through creative play and group games. The children have participated in activities such as Charades and Bingo. We are taking a break from all the crafts we worked on during the last weeks of 2016 to let the children have room to play.

We hope everyone has a lovely January!

Welcome winter!

Winter arrived with a big snowy storm and here at SFO want to make the best of it. This means that we will be spending time outdoors, so remember to pack warm clothes and appropriate shoes! We will also start re-decorating the SFO room since it has been home to some nice fall and Halloween decorations for the past weeks. We will start working on snow and ice crafts to incorporate this time of the year into our daily activities. Some of our crafts are already in place at SFO and we will continue to work on more.

Today we are also starting our "12 days of caring" project. Everyday, the children will work one a simple task to show their peers, family and school that they are caring individuals. On the first day we will write little notes to put in lockers of kids to brighten up their day.

Welcome winter!
